Ever open your bag (or drawer...or closet) and wonder how the eff you accumulated all those products? Or better yet, if you actually need them all? Us too. In the spirit of spring cleaning, we talked to celebrity makeup artist Joanna Schlip to get her pro take on the only five items you actually need in your makeup bag.1. BB CREAM WITH SPF SPF is a crucial addition to anyone's beauty routine to prevent sun damage and skin cancer, but many formulas can feel cake-y on your skin. Not so with Kiehl's Skin Tone Correcting and Beautifying BB Cream with SPF 50. "I like it because it absorbs into the skin so it works like a foundation would but you get the benefit of the SPF 50," says Schlip. "They also have a great range of tones."2. CONCEALER We all have days where we struggle with dark under-eye circles and pimples—hence where having a great concealer is key. "Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer conceals anything and everything," says Schlip. "Because it has two shades side by side, you can manipulate the formulation and you can even highlight with it." She also recommends adding a little moisturizer to sheer it out when you're looking for a lighter tint.3. MULTI-TASKING PALETTE When you're working with a minimalist makeup bag, multi-taskers like Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Custom All-In-One Nude Palette For Face And Eyes in Warm Nude are key. "Basically it's a tiny little square but it has 12 shades so you can use it for shadow, highlighter, blush, contouring, all of it," says Schlip. "I can't go anywhere without it—this is the bomb."4. BRONZER Bronzer is the ideal contour powder, while also doubling as a skin pick-me-up on those blah-looking days. Schlip's number one is Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer ($15, ulta.com). "A lot of the bronzers I see now either have too much shimmer or they're too matte, but this one is right in between," she says. (Don't forget to wash it all off at the end of the day with The Rain Facial Cleanser from the Women's Health Boutique!)5. BROW TAMER Every woman needs a little brow help from time-to-time, says Schlip. "I use three to four products on a woman's brows," she says. "If you just use a pencil its going to look artificial." Smashbox Brow Tech To Go does double duty by combining an angled brow pencil with a clear brow gel, which you can build to achieve a natural look, says Schlip. "If you skin and your brows look good you can go anywhere—you can get away with anything."
