A Wuse Zone 2 Magistrates’ Court, Abuja on Tuesday sentenced Abdullahi Mustapha to three weeks imprisonment for stealing transformer cables.
The convict, of no fixed address, had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and theft, and begged the court for leniency.
The Magistrate, Mr Muhammad Abdulmumini, however, gave the convict an option to pay a N10,000 fine, warning him to desist from the crime.
Abdulmumini said that the punishment would serve as deterrent to others.
The prosecuting counsel, Mr Augustine Urom, had told the court that Mustapha was arrested by a team of policemen attached to Gwarimpa, Abuja, on Aug. 8.
Urom said the convict was caught with a bag containing three short armoured cables, two hark saw and iron bar.
He said that the convict confessed during police investigation that three of his accomplices were at large.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 97 and 288 of the Penal Code.
